NBA Scoring Volatility

How predictable are NBA scorers game-to-game? This dashboard covers the entire 3-point era (1979–present), filtering to games with 15+ minutes played. Volatility is measured using Coefficient of Variation (CV) — the ratio of standard deviation to mean scoring. Lower CV means more consistent output.

Scoring Volume vs Volatility

Each dot is a player. As PPG rises, CV drops — stars are predictable.

Median Volatility by Tier

Clear staircase: elite scorers cluster near CV 0.35, bench players above 0.85.

Absolute Point Swings vs PPG

Raw StdDev rises with PPG (r = 0.90) — bigger volume, bigger swings in raw terms.

CV Distribution

Right-skewed: most players below CV 1.5, long tail from low-usage players.
